It's German for "khaki trousers". Say it slowly.

Maybe you've got to be British to understand the joke?

It's a small world though; Verden isn't very big. I was at the British army camp there.

How come your English is so good? It's more than just school learnt English and funnily enough it's better than a lot of English people's.

 if you say it slowly it does make sense, yeah :D
Yeah what a small world it is huh?

I am actually very insecure about my English, so hearing that from a native speaker is a great compliment :)
I just watch all the movies in English, almost exclusively listen to English music, read most books in english, except for the BB, that is so hard to understand in English!
I am just a huge fan of the langauge and Great Britain... I really wanna go to Scotland, Wales and Ireland... been to England a couple of times!

Yes the way Feeya writes you would never know that English was not her first (main) language, and I get the khaki pants joke. Like the British army every schoolboy where I live wears them as part of their uniform, a leftover from when the area was ruled by England.

Lord knows I dislike some of the Yankee words I hear, but the British people also confuse things with talk of “trousers,” and words like petrol instead of gas and car boot instead of trunk, hood instead of bonnet and the list goes on, but then they might say they invented the language so I guess we can't argue.

I really wanna go to Scotland, Wales and Ireland

We've been to Scotland and Ireland. Absolutely gorgeous. The stories and leprecons and fridge magnets and Christmas trimmings ....... wow! Loved it! The strangest thing though is that I never really drank much on holiday. Thank goodness for that cause I don't remember much of the holidays in general so imagine if I was still sloshed at the same time. Hehehehe ... I'm a smoker and the one thing I DO remember was forcing the entire top of my body to hang out a tiny which only opened about 40 cms (RSA) window so I could smoke without the smell getting into the room or the smoke detectors going off. (and this was SOBER  ) I had huge black bruises all over my shoulders, arms and I think even my chest the entire holiday

We've been to Germany - I cant remember the name right now (I think it starts with a D - a smallish town) but what amazed me was how everyone followed the rules when crossing the streets. They would actually wait until the light turned green before crossing the street. Here by us it seems to work in reverse - when the little man is red THATS when pedestrians sloooooowly start crossing the street. And the streets were beautiful and clean. Everyhing there was just perfect. The people were fantastic and so helpful there. I do remember that in Germany I continuously went into the men's bathrooms. I don't know whether it was the signage that was confusing or what was going on with me in Germany but a big Fraulein chased me out of one of the bathrooms. Thankfully. Just to happen again at the next "pit stop"

Since its quiet on the site the members would probably not mind if I share some of my travelling memories - or at least, the ones I can remember ...

Switzerland - the snow would come a few days after we left already. Zurich and Geneva is nice but Engelberg .... wow! been back twice there. partly because I just came out of a clinic on the same day we were flying (was still on bipolar meds at that time and the meds had to be re-examined and changed) so we were travelling with half a suitcase full of pills I was on at that particular moment  . All I remember from the first trip to Switzerland that I was painting fat ladies. Literally. I had my painting kit with me and whenever you saw me I was painting - but ONLY FAT ladies! How's that for obsession? Whilst on the train, in the room, in the park ... the family still kills themselves laughing about me and the fat ladies on that trip.

Paris was beautiful with all the gold in the gates and yes we did see the hotel where Princess Di stayed. Personally I found the French quite rude so we eventually started speaking to them in Afrikaans and THEN they became so pleasant. Paris didn't really have toilets though and the ones you could find always required small change so nope, negative emotions when I think back of the time in France. Good pancakes though :D

London is nice. People are lovely but its not the place for me. Too busy. It kind of reminds of our JHB here. The red double decker busses and red telephone booths brought back many memories and that I absolutely love about London. And the guard - hehehehe - typical tourist we stood next to them and tried our utmost to make them laugh or move  but nope. Well trained -i'll give them that. They did not move a muscle. I wonder if they're used to tourists behaving like that and what they actually think when we do that? Mmmmmm maybe its best I don't know unless the ex-soldiers want to give us some idea what might have been going through their minds

Argentina was nice especially the ranch we visited with the empanadas. This day I had stax of red wine so don't ask me anything else about that day. I remember flamingo dancers and huge steaks and a bus ride back to the hotel but that's about it.

Amsterdam - wow there I would like to go again. A beautiful city and the red light area is absolutely fascinating. The ladies in the windows. Nothing like ive ever seen. Tulips and those clog shoe thingies at the market. A completely different world. And all the people on the bicycles. I think it was here we saw a tram - we don't see that here by us. Apparently stealing bicycles is the biggest crime in Amsterdam (well a that time) that's not too bad hey? id rather they steal my bicycle than some of the things going on these days.

The absolute best place for me though is Rome. I remember Rome. The cobbled roads, the little restaurants, the Vatican, the fountain, the Italian ice cream. We went back to Rome a couple of times as I simply could not get enough of Rome. The room we stayed in was huge. Old furniture which I loved and scaffolding at the window. I didn't know it was scaffolding - I thought its part of the décor so that is once again a story the family never forget. I would live in Rome if I could. The weather's nice and there's so much history there! Even the atmosphere in Rome is filled with history. A most wonderful city indeed.

Venice - mmmm glad I saw it before it disappears but that's about it.

Mauritius - loved it. Been there about 7 times but its too commercial for me now. On one of the trips we were there when there was a (I don't know it they call it a zone 4) cyclone or something? That was sooooooo scary! My son was still small so I didn't sleep that night at all! I packed a little bag containing his bottles, nappies and other thingies and had my tekkies right by the door. I figured if anything happens i'll grab my son, tekkies and bag and just run for the highest location. Bugger hubby. He would be on his own  (Not that there were any high locations near. The side of the island we were on was pretty flat). You get the best tans (sunbathing) in Mauritius but it gets hot as hell so best stay in a hotel with aircon. Hehehehe while I was pacing up and down hubby was snoring away peacefully until I started waking him up every 15 minutes to walk to the ocean to see if the water was still where it was supposed to be. My reasoning was that I didn't hear the frogs anymore so best we make sure everything was still right.

I would still like to go to Peru and Egypt but must say I'm quite happy with what we've experienced so far and am just enjoying staying at home now. Maybe I'm getting old or just comfortable where we are in this period of our lives.

and words like petrol instead of gas and car boot instead of trunk, hood instead of bonnet and the list goes on
These are the words we use here in RSA as well  (not hood though - a bonnet is a bonnet especially when its a Voksie bonnet  I'm taking it you are referring to a car?)

Seriously? You are the only person I've ever met who visited the island. I knew many of the island folk as they worked on Diego Garcia (BIOT). Yes I miss the sun because it was so strong just 3 degrees off the equator. I lived on BIOT for 27 months and it was a really nice place that had not been totally trashed by man and his greed.

Cheers.

Oh Mauritius is beautiful and the locals absolutely wonderful. The only thing I didn't like was there were so many skinny dogs roaming the streets and there was a particular small island (you probably know this) they actually called it "Dog Island" was so many strays and unwanted dogs. We would take a trip down each time to feed the dogs (probably not all of them as there were so many) and was very happy to hear that there was apparently a local man who specifically went to the island every day to put food for the dogs. The last time we were there, however, we were told he passed away so I don't even want to think about the doggies on that particular island. I have never seen ocean like in Mauritius. The colour of the water is spectacular. Its not blue and not green. And some areas is a very light shade of green, then some almost emerald, another part a deep blue ..... There's different colours. Oh no, those who haven't been to Mauritius must definitely go.! Its a holiday they'll never forget. (that's why we went back so many times :D ) Very wise suggestion to those who still drink - Stay away from the rum offered on the boats and catamaran. That stuff turn blood into pure liquor. One glass and its man down. Alcoholic or normal drinker. Not a good idea.

That does not sound like Germany at all  but good for you on liking it here!
I hate Germany... we have a culture of ignorence ( it is not a problem if we pretend it doesn't exist) wich comes all the way from 'after world war 2' and it sucks. Alcoholism and addiction aren't adressed properly, neither are lgbtq rights... we have a long way to go I suppose... good to hear that visitors like it here though... I dream of moving away... maybe just into a bigger city (I live very rural) or to Scotland... even though, the last time I spoke to a Scotsman I barely understood a word
For a while I wanted to move to Finland, been there a few times but I am convinced that I would not be able to stay sober there...
I wanna see the world, so who knows where life is going to take me...
It is weird, I had all these weird plans, all the places I wanted to visit and now that I am getting clearer I realise that travelling the world takes more than a backpack and a bottle of wine... :D

 I'm still trying to remember the name. itll come then i'll tell you where it is. Maybe you just need to move there :D no, seriously now, all our countries have more or less the same problem hon. that brings up another memory  a few years ago whilst in a drunken state I decided that ill make a damn good President. So I found the email address of the party I support and sent an email to the person in charge telling her all about what a difference I would make if I became a speaker for that particular party   Oh man! Thinking back I'm pretty sure I now know why I never heard from them

Never give up on your dreams. Things will change and start rolling once you've graduated and then you CHASE your dream!

Finland .... mmm that's an idea :D ive had moments when I even considered Antartica (don't know if the spelling is right. In Afrikaans we call it Antartika)

I considered Antarctica as well, but that was during the more depressed times.
I thought that living away from humanity just surrounded by snow and ice would be a great help in getting sober... lol...

 until we read in BB that it would follow us cause it was actually us that was the problem. Oh man Feeya you wont believe how happy I am just waking up in the morning without that fear of " what the heck did I do again last night" and the shame when I was told or even worse, when I read what I did. I didn't go out or drive or anything like that so thank God I never had to run outside to see if the car was there nope, I just couldn't keep my fingers off my cellphone and had to message the entire country you know? Oh no. That is not a life. Really.

And don't you find that since you've stopped drinking you haven't had one suicidal thought? I didn't even realise that until a few weeks ago when one of my AA friends mentioned it about herself. Heck the last night she drank se set herself on fire. Her booze filled brain figured that she didnt want to commit suicide then nobody would feel sorry for her but if it looked like an accident ..... that shows us the cunningness of alcohol. It made us see, think and feel things that were never real. Even in my not so good days I thank God because as another member shared somewhere - even my worst day now is still a better day than when I was drinking.

On that note I have to scadoodle. :D Hubby and son is calling :D they wanna watch our favourite programs that we haven't seen from Monday night. Jeah!!! I looooove good tv :D

have an awesome rest of the evening and thanks for the chat. I really enjoyed it. :D Maybe ill check in again later (and thumbs up). I soooooo wish one of the members will help us to get a thumbs up icon with our smilie faces :D (hint hint  )

I did that too. And the worst part was that I would always tell people how much I loved them. I used to send cheesy text message to all kinds of people, how important they were to humanity and how much I believed in them and stuff...
Usually the only responses I got were either:
Are you drunk/ are you on *insert any drug you can think of*, or a simple: hope you are not driving...

Here's the part about Alaska -
Ch. 7 Working with Others
...      We meet these conditions every day. An alcoholic who cannot meet them, still has an alcoholic mind; there is something the matter with his spiritual status. His only chance for sobriety would be some place like the Greenland Ice Cap, and even there an eskimo might turn up with a bottle of scotch and ruin everything! Ask any woman who has sent her husband to distant places on the theory he would escape the alcohol problem.
