Winter Activities

Post by JoeV1305 »

I'm new here and live in an area where we have hot humid summers and freezing snowy winters. I like to stay active and I have already started focusing on working out every Saturday and Sunday to help motivate me from staying out late on Friday and Saturday. In the summer I enjoyed running, soccer, softball, hiking, camping, swimming, boating, etc. I have yet to go a winter in the AA program. I use to enjoy snowboarding and would like to make a couple trips to do that this winter. Recent winters we often would stay inside and occasionally go out to bars and restaurants. Also there are the holidays and parties which I imagine will be tough to avoid a drink. I'd like to be open and honest at holiday parties this winter to help in those situations but as the winter progresses what are some activities people do when the weather is cold and nasty to avoid temptation.

Hi Joe... are you in Iowa? LOL sounds like us here. I am ready to be locked in by the snow ~ though I live in the city and it is entirely by choice...

I do not know if you have a clubhouse where you are, but we have 3. One actually has an entertainment committee that does events twice a month - Not AA related, but supporting the sober community. There are also chili feed dinners, holiday dinners and holiday alkathons. Friends do potlucks and movies and the like. Just ask, or set some stuff up yourself. Now that you are sober you can also participate in any community activities as you see fit! If they are drinking too much, just leave.

Service in AA always needs good and passionate people. Contact your Intergroup. I can help you find them if you like, just PM me your whereabouts... or post here. Keep coming here too... we are not concerned with weather, LOL unless it takes out the electricity!

Well there you have it! I know they have a great District there! Met several folks from your area during the Regional Forum a few years back! You will find District info if you follow the links from the main AA website http://www.aa.org/pages/en_US/find-aa-resources

Good to have a neighbor here in the midwest! We are already getting threats of snow and it sure feels like winter out there today!

I lived in the midwest for 25 years. The Sunflower Roundup in Kansas City in February is lovely.

Now I live in on the Gulf Coast where we don't have winter.

Welcome to E-AA...can I ask...have you completed your steps? The 10th step promises say that we do not avoid temptation...the problem does not exist for us as long as keep in fit spiritual condition. I'm around drinking with family and friends on the holidays...drinking doesn't bother me anymore after working the program. Like Paige said though if it starts to get annoying I just leave.
