Unexpected Hearing of the message

Post by Sweeney »

It can't be just me who hears recovery in songs. I don't know if any of the writers are in recovery but I keep hearing lyrics that I ID with through my recovery

Stuck in my head atm is "if you don't like what's going down you need to change something round and what you can't change you got to change the way you thought about"

Now to me this has a similar meaning to the serenity prayer. There are lots of others but that's what's going round in my head today.

Well, even the Serenity Prayer wasn't originally AA. We seem to view the world through different inerpersonal lenses based on the way we live our lives. We see what we want to see. If our lives embody movement toward recovery, makes sense we'd see recovery.

Warren Zevon does that for me a lot of the time. I really feel the down and out-ness through his music sometimes.

"Bad luck streak in dancin' school; down on my knees in pain. I've been acting like a fool - swear to God I'll change."

I know that place.

REDLIGHT KINGS... Bullet in My Hand
I've got a fast life and
a slow cuttin knife
I've been drinkin at a poisoned well
No home and a bag of bones
Nothin else left to sell
I know why I'm in this hell
I just don't want to believe
Past that line you just can't tell
but right now
There's someone lookin out for me

I came out of the darkness with
a bullet in my hand
I got one more shot at livin
I'm lucky that I can
Cause I got a little roughed up
I really got f***ed up
I came out of the darkness with
a bullet in my hand

I've got a cold stare the woun'd still there
And there ain't much left to bleed
A short fuse that I still use
I'm my own worst enemy
Stare at the faces I once knew lined up just to bury me
There's a long black car that's waitin to leave
but right now
There's someone looking out for me

I came out of the darkness with
a bullet in my hand
I got one more shot at livin
I'm lucky that I can
Cause I got a little roughed up
I really got f***ed up
I came out of the darkness with
a bullet in my hand

Can you see the light
Can you see the light
Can you see the light
I can see the light
I can see the light

I came out of the darkness with
a bullet in my hand
I got one more shot at livin
I'm lucky that I can
Cause I got a little roughed up
I really got f***ed up
I came out of the darkness with
a bullet in my hand
Cling to the thought that, in God's hands, the dark past is the greatest possession you have - the key to life and happiness for others. With it you can avert death and misery for them. page 124 BB

What a great topic! I pick up direction from God everywhere. Some of my favorites.

If you are having trouble making an amend where the other person wronged you as well – watch “Changing Lanes” – “He has to write his own letter”.

I tell my sponsees when they are writing their fourth step resentment list to put on Phil Collins, In the Air Tonight and write down anyone who comes to mind.

“Leave the inmates, free the guards” – a great line for me to remember once I did enough work on my defects that I didn’t have to police every word that came out of my mouth.

From the movie “Shadow Hours” – The devil made a mistake with Job, instead of taking everything away he should have given him everything. When you have nothing left you have nowhere to turn to but to God.

Here's a couple that just popped into my head...

"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice"..... Rush, I think.

"Nothing is as seems"..... Mr. Myaghi

"Sun is warm, grass is green".... (everything is as it should be).... Mr. Myaghi

"Come back tomorrow".... Mr. Myaghi

I was about 3 1/2 years sober when The Traveling Wilbury's song came out. "Going to the end of the line" and "Handle me with care".....Then Don Henley's "End of the innocence" my personal favorite is the old Bob Seger song "Against the wind" the lines that really gets me is "surrounded by strangers who I thought were my friends." and this later in the song "Well those drifter days are all past me now , I've got so much more to think about,Deadline's and commitments, what to leave in what to leave out." Some of the messages I've come across John D.

KICKS, Paul Revere and the Raiders
Girl, you thought you found the answer on that magic carpet ride last night
But when you wake up in the mornin' the world still gets you uptight
Well, there's nothin' that you ain't tried
To fill the emptiness inside
But when you come back down, girl
Still ain't feelin' right

Chorus:
(And don't it seem like)
Kicks just keep gettin' harder to find
And all your kicks ain't bringin' you peace of mind
Before you find out it's too late, girl
You better get straight

No, but not with kicks
You just need help, girl

Well you think you're gonna find yourself a little piece of paradise
But it ain't happened yet, so girl, you better think twice
Don't you see no matter what you do
You'll never run away from you
And if you keep on runnin'
You'll have to pay the price

[repeat chorus]
Bridge:
No, you don't need kicks
To help you face the world each day
That road goes nowhere
I'm gonna help you find yourself another way

Chorus:
(And don't it seem like)
Kicks just keep gettin' harder to find
(Oh, you don't need kicks, girl)
And all your kicks ain't bringin' you peace of mind
(You just need help, girl)
Before you find out it's too late, girl
You better get straight
Kinda of identified,

One song I always wanted to pass along it's called "The light that has lighted the world" by George Harrison
it is a real personal favorite it reminds of early recovery
here are the lyrics
I've heard how some people have said that I've changed
That I'm not what I was how it really is a shame
the thoughts in their heads manifest upon their brow
like bad scars from ill feelings they themselves aroused

So hateful of anyone that is happy or free
to live all there lives without looking to see
the light that has lighted the world

It's funny how people just won't accept change
as if nature itself they'd prefer rearranged
so hard to move on when you're down in a hole
where there's so little chance to experience soul

I'm grateful to anyone that is happy or free
for giving me hope while I'm looking to see
the light that has lighted the world......

I like George Harrison's Just For Today as well.

Just for today
I could try to live through this day only
Not deal with all life's problems
Just for today

If just for one night
I could feel not sad and lonely
Not be my own life's problem
Just for one night

If just (for) today
I could try to live through this day only
Not deal with all life's problems
Just for today

If just for one night
I could feel not sad and lonely
Not be my own life's problem
Just for one night

Just for today
I could try to live through this day only
Not deal with all life's problems
Just for today

Just for today

"One Step Into The Light"
(Michael Pinder) Moody Blues

One step into the light,
One step away from night,
It's the hardest step you're gonna take.
The ship to take you there,
Is waiting at the head,
Of the stairs that lead up through your opened mind.

Above the dark despair,
Shines a light that we can share.
Close your eyes and look up in between your brows.
Then slowly breathing in,
Feel the life force streaming in.
Hold it there, then send it back to him.

All the old things are returning,
Cosmic circles ever turning.
All the truth we've been yearning for,
Life is our savior, savior, savior, save your soul.

The river of living breath,
Is flowing through the sun.
He was there before the earth began.
The world will drag on you,
Use his love to pull you through.
Find the mission of your life and start to be.

All the old things are returning,
Cosmic circles ever turning.
All the truth we've been yearning for,
Life is our savior, savior, savior, save your soul.

There's one thing I can do,
Play my Mellotron for you.
Try to blow away your city blues.
Your dreams are not unfound,
Get your feet back on the ground.
The truth will set us free, we cannot lose. We cannot lose,
We cannot lose, we just have to choose. We cannot lose
"If you are humble nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are.", Mother Teresa

Louis Armstrong - "Wonderful World". Timeless.

Never "felt" that song until I got sober.

Thanks, Ed

Rollin' on with the tides of time
Lookin' for connection in the current of my mind
Nothin's quite as real as it may seem
Raftin' on the white waters of my mind

Try to play it safe, just go with the flow
Dodgein' round emotions churnin' from below
Damin' up confusion, with things from the outside
Raftin' on the white waters of my mind

When I find the fear to face the fear
Using all my instincts, learning how to steer
Everything I need is right there inside
Raftin' on the white waters of my mind

Then the boilng foam, It just dissapears
The warmth and peace and stillness, so very near
A quiet breath of hope, shows freedom so sublime
Raftin' on the white waters of my mind
Raftin' on the white waters of my mind
