Re: Alcoholism

Lack of Power, that is the dilemma ... self-control becomes utterly useless ... drinking habits were deeply affecting my life and I couldn't seem to stop or manage it from getting any worse. Then I came to Alcoholics Anonymous and you taught me about alcoholism... This approach continues to work......

Re: How to deal with Thanksgiving and all the alcohol

What do you say to someone who is pouring you a drink and be polite? "At a proper time and place explain to all your friends why alcohol disagrees with you. If you do this thoroughly, few people will ask you to drink." (page 102) I typically tell people quite clearly that I am among the one-in-ten ...

Re: Alcoholism in AA is classed as a spiritual malady

It is not that you had done anything horrible, Tosh. It is just that I prefer to follow the other guy's lead all the way out whenever possible and especially when he believes he has something new for us all. His thought might end up being nonsense, but trying to quash it dismissively only reinforces...

Re: Alcoholism in AA is classed as a spiritual malady

{Quoted user asked to have his posts removed by admin} I totally understand, but I do not think any actual harm is done...and neither do I understand why Tosh is giving your grief here. That is quite unusual for him. Some people seem to need to view alcoholism as a disease for the sake of some kind ...

Re: Alcoholism in AA is classed as a spiritual malady

{Quoted user asked to have his posts removed by admin} If you might know any related details, please share them. I have never heard of A.A. making any statement other than this: "The doctor's theory that we have an allergy to alcohol interests us. As laymen, our opinion as to its soundness may, of c...

Re: No Pussy Footing Around!

I could be wrong here, but I am assuming that was one of Dr. Bob's misfires that took place prior to Bill and Bob becoming acquainted and A.A. getting started... "This physician [Dr. Bob] had repeatedly tried spiritual means (see previous post) to resolve his alcoholic dilemma but had failed. But wh...

Re: e-aa.org relationship wth aa.org

Is this site...officially sanctioned AA website for recovery discussions? Yes, it is officially sanctioned by the members of the e-aa group. It is important to understand that A.A. is *not* an organization and that our hierarchy is therefore upside-down. "A.A.-r-us" as members of our autonomous A.A...

Re: Alcoholism in AA is classed as a spiritual malady

Thanks lee I have altered my title Cool beans. Dr. Silkworth clearly admitted this in relation to our alcoholism: "We doctors have realized for a long time that some form of moral psychology was of urgent importance to alcoholics, but its application presented difficulties beyond our conception. Wh...

Re: disease concept

Welcome, Darryl! Call me Lee or Joe, and I am an alcoholic who has taken the Steps to have my problem removed because I could not stay sober one-day-at-a-time. The AMA recognise alcoholism as a disease this is demonstrated in residential programs as they are facilitated by medical professionals. Thu...

Re: Not getting support

...I want to stop drinking. Right now she doesn't believe I can do it and says that drinking isn't my problem. That is correct. The real alcoholic is just as powerless while sober as while drinking. She believes my problem is I'm 28 and I'm unable to act like an adult and drink normally. That also ...

Re: Church donation for (10hr) 5th Step: what's fair?

Thoroughness does not have to take several hours, but we have changed the topic, which could be expected since any payment would be time based anyway... Ask the listener before you begin? There you go. Just go to the individual beforehand and ask what might be expected in return for two-to-three ho...

Re: Church donation for (10hr) 5th Step: what's fair?

Today, a "thorough" 5th Step may run 10-15hrs I know a friend who read & talked 18hrs for his 5th. And a sponsee said he filled out 14 notebooks, his last time I hope anyone new...will understand that this isn't the norm. Yes, and I would say the above examples are not even actual Fifth Steps. We a...

Re: Meetings

I really don't know how I'll ever be able to wrap my brain around literally never drinking again. The idea there there is not that we cannot ever drink again -- we can drink and die, if we please -- but that we cannot ever again drink *safely*. No one is try to take away anyone's right to experienc...

Re: Meetings

Hi, Fairisle, and welcome. I'm slowly becoming more hopeful that I can make some changes... As tiny as the progress of 1 or 2 days may seem, it makes me hopeful that I can keep going. And what I'm trying to do now is get a better understanding of how AA works. Some people admit they are powerless wh...
