Re: In what ways has the Fellowship of AA changed

No smoking. Seriously, I am now an "old timer" I guess, 34 years. I think that when I was new, more old timers came to the meetings, often every night. Everyone came to the Friday birthday celebrations and most of us went to dinner after. Now, I don't notice as much regular attendance from old...

Re: question about gifting coins

I received a fancy coin one year, from a friend, but it was given at the birthday meeting. Others have received fancy coins purchased by friends also. No problem.

Re: Modem Step 4

Neurologically speaking, hand writing activates different circuits in the brain than typing. I'd recommend writing, and you should be able to read your own handwriting.

However, don't quibble about this. Just get it done somehow.

Re: New to AA, but not Recovery

Last night I was in a meeting where a guy mentioned that he had just met another man who had worked in a treatment center but had got drunk after 17 years. The poor man had thought that since he spent all day in a treatment center that he didn't need meetings and had quit doing and of his own step w...

Re: Help Me Respond to Someone Who Wants To Amend

Sounds like your SIL is new to recovery and not yet on sound footing. Decades of bad behavior cannot be "amended" that quickly. It is ok to tell her to wait. Might even be good for her.

Re: Addicts in AA meetings?

In the past 2 years, I have read about 10 books on opioid addiction and other drug addictions and neuro science. I've come to believe that it is good to put heroin addicts on other opioids like suboxone, or naltrexone. But it really is putting them on a better drug, not clean. I get the purpose and ...

Re: Fear

When I got sober, our group emphasized going to work every day for a year. It was a challenge! Sounds hard right? Just make yourself go to work? But you know, work is one way to get out of yourself. I work as a barista. I am totally busy for the six or so hours I am there. No time to think about mys...

Re: 1 year, 9 months sober - Really need help with depression/being an adult

Instead of "re-parenting" try making living amends to yourself.

And, this is the journey of a life time. There is more and more wellness available. There is no end. Two steps forward, one back. 2 forward, one back. That is progress not perfection.

Re: My first year of sobriety on January 3rd

Early in the program, an old timer told me, "you have to be a friend to make a friend." And also said, "Why don't you call _____? She would make a good friend." So the responsibility for making friends was put squarely on my shoulders; and the old timers didn't give a sh!t about social anxiety. They...

Re: 12 Steps

I'm not sure "making a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of god" works for me. Becoming sober as I see it comes down to my own willpower and motivation and facing my responsibilities head on.
LMAO.... If you could control your drinking, then you wouldn't need AA.

Re: Sponsor homework I don't think I can do

My first sponsor had me write down my thoughts on powerlessness for a week. Then write down my thoughts on unmanageability for a week. She wanted me to know what I thought of powerlessness and unmanagability. maybe this slightly different phrasing will help you to see why you should do the exercise

Re: Wanting a new way of life

I’m not ready to go to a meeting, but maybe in the future. In past I would have to drink a bit to be in any type of a social setting. This is probably just an excuse. Go in to the meeting and sit down. You can pass if you don't want to talk. A few people can genuinely not go to meetings, but most p...
