I am not opposed to anything that helps a person to not drink. From my own experience, any thing other than doing the footwork of AA and the steps, was me looking for a quick fix, a bandaid, and an excuse for my alcoholism. For me, the bottom line was (is) nothing but working the program was the sol...

How do retain your individuality in AA?
By not trying to retain it. By just being me. If I try to retain it, I ain't really got it.

Are you saying that I have to do everything exactly as it says in the Big Book. We all have our own paths that are strictly for us. I feel that I have all the answers that I need inside of me already, but a lot of times, I need other people perspectives to find the answers that are inside of me. Pr...

Again, I went and am glad that I did. Being away from that daily grind I had before going, was big for me. Can't honetly tell you if I would have made it this far w/o treatment or not. Ditto for me, plus everything else that Paul said. I can totally empathize with you Joe, lots of similarities in o...

I went to a 28 day program and yes it did give a certain momentum, but it didn't stop my relapse 6 months later. I tried to reenter the same 28 day program. The counselor, who I hated when he said it, but in retrospect glad he did, said "what are you going to learn this time that you didn't the firs...

I find them quite useful. What do you mean?
They seem to be getting in your way.

What are those thought patterns?
In a condensed nutshell version, getting what I want in life, as opposed to wanting what I get in life.

I left a word out of my statement, I meant to say "the same deity beliefs". I still can't pigeonhole my deity belief, but don't necessarily want to either. My beliefs are evolving constantly as my life evolves. definition of deity in the Consise Oxford Dictionary ---- "deity n. Divine status, qualit...

I can relate to the little devil statement to a degree. My alcoholism is the result of series of thought patterns that are certainly still available to me today. If I resort to those same patterns, they will lead to the same results or past, never backwards.

Is this how it is? There is no one "how it is". Everyone's view of life is unique to them. Everyone I encounter has a lesson to teach, I only hope that I can be receptive to the lesson. Many times the obvious eludes me. If it all ever becomes clear to me, I had better back up a bit, because I am de...

Religion has to do with a deity, spirituality has to do with an individual's soul. We all have souls, we don't necessarily all have the same deity beliefs. What I still gets me though is why does AA insist that it's "spiritual and not religeous" when there is no clear difference? I wouldn't spend mu...

Welcome AA man, glad you are here! To me religion is someone else's opinion of what a higher power is. Spirituality is my opinion of what a higher power is. At any rate, that is my view and I'm sticking to it.

I hope I learn to feel at home here, because I am afraid I won’t come here when I need to unless I feel at home. Hi Emily, glad to have you here! The best way to feel at home here is to come often, especially before you need to, because then if a time arises that you need to, it will be second natu...

Hi Karen. For me, alcohol was but a symptom of my problems. Drinking was only the tip of the iceberg, much more lurked below the surface. My difficulties with life started way before I ever picked up my first drink, so to get to the root took much more than merely not drinking. My salvation has been...

Have you been to a counselor on a solo basis? That would be my recommendation, in addition to the marriage counseling.
