Re: Hi. So 26 years in the waiting.

Yes. We've seen lots of people change -including ourselves. But it doesn't happen overnight. it takes time and work to become different, better, people. Confronting our relationship with alcohol is an important part. Take a look at what we call the big book. the second half of the book is filled wit...

15 years

On friday, 12/8/17 it will be 15 years since my last drink. This isn't really anything that i deserve much credit for; it wouldn't have been possible without a Higher Power looking out for me, and all the people in AA who taught me the techniques on how to stay sober. I just wanted to thank everyone...

Re: So Far, Disappointed

hi kaliare. i think you raise some very legitimate concerns regarding the some of the meetings you've attended and the people that you've encountered in AA. The fellowship is a place where people should, preeminently, feel safe. No one has the right to make you feel insignificant nor intimidate you ...

Thyroid Issues

hi. i was just wondering if there's anyone here who is a sober alcoholic who has thyroid issues. i had my (first in years) full blood work done and my numbers were off. i guess i have hypothyroidism. my doctor prescribed synthroid, i got the generic. i was cautioned to expect about 3 weeks of side e...

Re: Human Error or Relapse

At some of the meetings that are in my area they ask "is there anyone counting days who would like to raise their hand?" people raise their hand, tell us who they are and how much time they have sober. after they speak we clap in congratulations. one of the reasons we do this is to encourage people ...

Re: Hi. I need support please.

hi annette! i remember the uneasy feeling that i had walking through the door to my first meeting. not only the agony over my own condition but the fear and uncertainty about what this was all about. at my first meeting a guy came up to me, and said "you look new." i nodded. "let me tell you, if you...

Re: The word addiction

i try to keep in mind two things when i think about this 1) physical allergy and 2) mental obsession. when i start to drink, i can't put it down. when i don't drink i end up thinking about having one or finding myself in situations where, inexplicably, i end up drinking -even when i know the past co...

Re: Advice for a Recovering Wiccan

hi celtic. as you know, being different is never an easy challenge. and when there is a possibility that people we respect and that respect us might come to reject us it naturally makes us feel on edge. so, i can see where you're coming from. i think this feeling of standing outside the crowd is som...

Re: "Lawyer Meetings" (closed, invitation-only AA groups)

i've always wondered if there were closed meetings for sober bar-tenders and liquor store workers.

Re: Misattribution: Wm Paley, not H Spencer

Just recently I read a bit about about a philosophy called 'American Pragmatism' and the gist of it (or at least my understanding of it) seems to be that *something* doesn't stand or fall on it's basis in reality, but much depends upon it's transformative effect. I've also read that H Spencer didn'...
