Re: Long time listener, first time caller.
I truly to do want to go to meeting and change my life, but to be honest I can’t envisions my life without alcohol. I once heard a lady sharing "I can't trust my mind, I can't trust my mind" and I just thought she was crazy, but with a bit more insight I know what she meant. I too never thought I c...

Yes, I love that too. Even our pasts - however horrendous - can be used to help someone else.Seva wrote:How something so positive can come from a negative.

Re: Character defects
So you mean our defects naturally decrease from working the steps instead of us trying to work on them directly? Yes, exactly that. As I said, I don't think gossiping is a defect of character, it's a symptom of the defect (like drinking is a symptom - not the real problem). Low self esteem is a sel...

Re: Character defects
One of my big ones is gossiping about work colleagues. I don't think gossiping is a character defect; what makes you do the gossiping is the actual character defect. The Big Book reckons selfishness - self centredness - that's what it says are the root of all our troubles. Maybe if you decrease the...

Re: Character defects
Don't you guys think the Steps tell us that our character defects are not for us to work on? In Steps 6 and 7, we become willing and ask God to remove them, but that's as far as we go with regards the defects; the rest is up to God. But in reality, what I think happens, is that we work steps 10, 11,...

Re: Keeping Faith!
Faith - to me - isn't some weak belief in something, it's more of an action. For example I had to have faith that asking someone to be my sponsor (which was a big deal for me) would be somehow beneficial. Doing a Step 4 and 5 was a huge leap of faith. I came to A.A. to find a way to stop drinking - ...

Re: Happy New Year...
How does one say thank you to someone who helped save my life? Thank you Tosh Not me, Hanna; sobriety is a team sport. I'm just passing on stuff that's been said and helped me get some perspective. Well done on the sober time; at six plus years that old Hanna will feel like she was a different pers...

Re: Step 2 Keeping it Simple
If the steps were simple, there would not be any need for guidance as they would be so simple to understand. I, on the other hand, do not view AA as a simple program. Since the program requires an almost complete change in my thinking it will neither be quick or simple. I am however now becoming OK...

Re: Is Introversion a Character defect?
I'd guess introversion or extroversion; these things are like bricks. You can build a temple with them, or smash someone in the face with them. You Tosh ~ You crack me up. It's a line from the film 'Chariots of Fire' that stuck with me, along with "You can glorify God by peeling a potato if you pee...

Re: I drink a lot
I was wanting to know how I can stop living this way A.A. has a method; a program for this. And my first foray into 'thinking about stopping drinking' was an internet forum too (Tosh in Sober Recovery) and I asked if a life without drinking was worth living. My feelings at the time were that if I m...

Re: Step 2 Spiritual Guidance
I am in the process of re-working Step 2 and one of the questions I want to ask is how do YOU sense spiritual guidance? How is spiritual guidance related to Step 2? For me Step 2 is a process; something that happens along the way; not something for me to control or work on (like my character defect...

Happy New Year...
Happy new year all!
My new years resolution is to stop offending people by putting my foot in it.
I'm guessing since many of you here are from the USA, your new years resolution will be to lose some weight.
Hope you all have a great one.

Re: Is Introversion a Character defect?
I need to do more AA functions (I already do 5-6 meetings a week), sit up front, share more, etc to get over being introverted but I feel like thats against the grain and maybe its just who I am and not a character defect. Thoughts? I can be an extrovert; this can be a character defect because my e...

Re: Is Introversion a Character defect?
In Scotland where I live we have these things called mountain bothies. They are extremely basic old small stone buildings that can sometimes be found in the vast expanses of our natural mountain wilderness. They have no electricity but do have open fireplaces. The doors are left open and they are f...
