Re: The Steps Aren't Necessary

It was the working of the 12 steps that took away that mental obsession that told me I had to drink when I did not like the way I felt on the inside. I can't speak for anyone else, but they saved my life. For me they are the 12 steps to life.

Re: Sponsorship a substitution for faith?

Other facts are that there are also some so called AA meetings where one will not hear about the 12 Steps or the 12 Traditions of AA. And there are so called AA online chat rooms where you wonder if anyone involved knows about AA at all. So, sweeping claims as to the value of "meetings" needs to be...

Re: Sponsorship a substitution for faith?

This is a real live Alcoholics Anonymous Group. The group is global in scope and thus outside of the Conference of US/Canada World Services registration. This group is registered with The Online Intergroup. It has all of the components of a face to face group - including meetings in real time elswh...

Re: Anyone else experienced this?

I must admit chocolate is quickly becoming my drug of choice, thanks for the heads up. I shall now experiment with Raisins! :) Gray We can get addicted to anything. If we use it to stop feeling what we are feeling then we are repeating the same addictive behavior with another kind of fix. Good luck...

Re: Anyone else experienced this?

Interesting point and I agree with you. But my liking for sweet things is not an additction to substitute my addition to alcohol, if that is what you are implying? It was a light hearted post. No offense intended, just throwing in a little reality in the mix. It's up to you to decide what your addi...

Re: Sponsorship a substitution for faith?

I did not attend F2f meetings for 2 years and that is why during the second year I started having thoughts about whether I really should stay sober forever . Eventually I came to this site and I have been here for a year now. For me this is the equivalent of going to a meeting. I can read about peo...

Re: Sponsorship a substitution for faith?

Sponsorship is not a subsitution for faith. A good sponsor can be very helpful though.

Re: Anyone else experienced this?

Many alcoholics get sober and discover later that they have substituted one addiction for another. Many folks realize finally that they use food in the same way they abused alcohol. In other words, food becomes our drug of choice. We medicate any unwelcome feelings with food. We choose instant grati...

Re: Sponsorship a substitution for faith?

I have not been to an F2F meeting in over 3 years... If you have done without meetings for 3 years it should not surprise you that I could do it for 13 years. And before all this turns into a philosophical debate that will confuse any newcomers reading this let me say again what I have repeated con...

Re: Sponsorship a substitution for faith?

You do leave me with one question (and please do not take this wrongly, I am glad you are here and back at meetings, but I am curious as to why if everything was going find with your singular program of steps only, did you now return to the Fellowship? That's a fair question. I returned to the fell...

Re: The Steps Aren't Necessary

There are many people in my area who stay sober on meetings and regular guidance from their sponsors. As for me, I'm glad I was told the 12 steps are "the path we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery." I don't want to settle for mere sobriety; I want peace of mind.

Re: Sponsorship a substitution for faith?

Joe, the 12 steps are not to be separated from the fellowship. If it were not for the steps we would be just a fellowship of drunks - and not sober ones. As the Big Book says, "these are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery." We will always have the steps in our fellowship...
