Re: Making amends

Had I listened to my own mind I would have easily rationalized all amends away. But the directions didn't say "what do you think". Its not honest to believe I could drink pathologically for decades and only hurt myself. Its important not to put instructions in the book that don't exist. I ignored my...

Re: Such Unfortunates

I have been doing AA since the end of Dec 2019 when I got my first sponsor, working the steps, going to meetings, BB study, etc.. Every one tells me on how inspiring the BB is, or how some speaker's story touched them and their life has changed. I have been waiting to feel something, some sort of c...

Re: Can a Person be addicted to AA Meeting.

It's important to me to belong to and be active in a home group . That's one weekly meeting I rarely miss , even now with the upside down way things are, I do the ZOOM . It's weird, yes , but as long as I make that effort I stand a better chance of staying sober . I've met more members over the yea...

Re: How do I help my atheist sponsee?

The book says Abandon yourself.
I threw all my old ideas out.
I threw ME overboard.

My attention was drawn to the chapter "We agnostics"..
It was explained, "notice it doesn't say THE agnostics."

Page 164, God will show us how to create the fellowship we crave.

Page 162 "every alcoholic who journeys will find a Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous at his destination."

I notice it doesn't say I will find the fellowship I like.

Re: What now?

I am eight days sober. That feels like a monumental accomplishment to me. Last night for the first time in a couple days I found myself bored, anxious, and thinking “ok, now what?” Even with as busy as my life is with working full time with a family including a 7 month old at home, I found myself b...

Re: Sponsorship in relation to a BB Workshop

Like it or not , the fact is, many open discussion meetings are a place to practice and talk about abstinence management techniques. Its kinda like the AA waiting room. Attendees are not ready yet to see the Great Physician but are afraid to go back out in the parking lot. I only went looking for a ...

Re: Step 1

That is why humans are fascinating...one sentence...thirteen words...written in plain English...yet at least two different interpretations. Plain English never is when humans are involved. :~) My sponsor used a 1938 dictionary, the original intent is in there, its the same dictionary the authors us...

Re: Step 1

FWIW, growing up, my mother (education major/English minor) taught me that a dash was used to provide nuance and insight. Also, the first step says that "our lives had become unmanageable" as opposed to "that our lives were unmanageable". I hate to be a stickler but I think there are subtle differe...

Re: How do I help my atheist sponsee?

Notice the title of the chapter is WE agnostics. Not THE agnostics. Faith is not a requirement, only a willingness to believe and you're on your way. The book suggests a God of my own conception, not a God of my own invention so there are guidelines. A conception is built from attributes, what are t...

The problem with that for me is that I have HUGE abandonment issues.

Yep, exactly.
The book says "abandon yourself".

Re: Step 1

Hello, I'm currently in a treatment program and we have a weekly homework assignment I was looking for some help with. We have to ask 3 people in A.A. a question regarding one of the 12 steps. My question this week is "How did you approach/work step 1?" Thanks for your help! The big book is called ...

Re: Steps 1, 2 & 3

Once we have done the steps if a sponsee wants to sit with me and do a detailed Big Book Study then I am more than happy to do that. Ultimately this is not an academic exercise, we are not studying a PHD. Its a programme of action not study. Yeh, the book made a whole lot of sense after the steps, ...

If nothing else AA will ruin your drinking.
A good definition of hell is a head full of AA and a belly full of booze.
