Re: My story

I've had time to sit and think through things and you're right, I may be putting some of the blame off of myself in an attempt to just connect all the dots that led me to where I'm at, but I don't think anybody but myself could have gotten me to where I am and have been. I hear you, man, about blam...

Re: My story

Good detailed story. It fully describes the progressive nature of the disease.

So what's your recovery strategy/approach? How are you finding life changing for you?

I retract my prior message! Don't know if I've read/studied that longer form, but you're right. Interesting.

Re: 1st March Daily Reflection

This is a nice quote. Honestly, I may save it for every meeting when a newcomer walks in. My pet peeve in meetings is newcomer meetings when they dive into "1st step" or the like. I really want newcomers to hear a message of hope, serenity, and very basic insight as to how the program work...

Re: By laws for an AA group

Fourth tradition is that "each group should be autonomous" except as to issues affecting other groups or AA as a whole. So, if a group decides it wants formalized bylaws, I'm in no position to judge it. It doesn't affect my home group or AA as a whole. I don't know if it's "best pract...

Re: If you want to understand the Judeo-Christian-Islamic God, start with this.

Discussions like this in AA rooms always makes me nervous. Higher power = program, but I get worried where the religion line is vis-a-vis outside issues. To any newcomers, I'll just say -- an understanding of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic God is absolutely not a requirement of AA or recovery. I've bee...

Re: Denial???

Am i just doomed to being the boring one in the pub not drinking? Again one of my main fears. I sat and made a list of the approximate population over 21 and below 90 years old, the sort of folks that enjoy a drink and laugh in a bar or pub, I did this for New York since they have statistics for th...

Re: Denial???

Can you ever be a moderate drinker after having a drink problem? Am i just doomed to being the boring one in the pub not drinking? I hate not being able to drink normally. As you ponder that, ask yourself these questions: - Do you think I never tried to become a "normal" drinker after I r...

Re: Step Two: No North Star

I agree with the other posters. You don't have to have a perfect understanding of your higher power at Step 2. Step 2 is about hope -- we "came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." Step 2 definitely does not say "we came to perfectly identify, un...

Re: Good morning!

Welcome! Reading the book is a great place to start, but don't neglect the idea of finding a meeting or three. There's nothing like getting in a room with a group of people who have lived what you've lived (the inability to stop when they want and need to stop) and can offer you hope that there's a ...

Re: My sponsor only has 7 months sober

The general rule in my home group is that you're eligible to sponsor once you've worked through the steps. That said, if someone worked the steps years ago and then went back out, we'd probably ask that they at least have gone back through step work with someone else before sponsoring. But, every gr...

Re: Why can't I think the same after drinking almost 2 fifths (1.15 L) of Caliber Vodka in a 24 hour period of time?

Harsh, folks, harsh. To the OP, if you're still here. I don't have any experience with permanent damage from drinking, at least that I'm aware of. That said, I hope you and your doctors determine the cause a cure, if there is one. That's really a medical question, and us drunks aren't the best suite...
