Re: Mixed feelings after taking Step 5

I didnt feel relieved, happy, or unburdened either. I've done it twice. I dread doing it a third time. It was not cathartic. In fact I felt depressed for several days. I tried to be as honest as I could. I just felt like a horrible person and everything was obviously my fault, that my life was unsal...

Re: DO NOT READ THIS POST IF YOU DON'T LIKE READING ABOUT CRITICISM OF AA!

I've never had a therapist, or read any recovery material from another program that directly contradicted anything in AA. And I think the reason is that Bill and Bob based their ideas on actual observations of how alcoholics act and talk and think, and the predictable patterns that occur over the co...

Re: In a general way

I guess I would have to disagree. For the newcomer, theres nothing like hearing another person's story to break down defenses and open ones eyes. It has acompletely different effect from than a doctor or nurse or relative saying you need to do something about your drinking. It breaks down ones defen...

Re: One day at a time

Is the point of one day at a time that if one does run into cravings out of the blue, theres a good chance he wont have it tomorrow?

Re: I dont want to get up in the morning.

Hang in there, Daelynn. Those first few months when it was so difficult to not drink, I used the difficulty to reinforce that I had a problem. If I didn't have a problem, then not drinking would be easy. Because it wasn't easy, I had a problem. Circular logic, but it worked for me to keep me mindfu...

Re: What more can our group do to carry the message?

It's probably an a tall order, but alcoholics without drivers licenses might appreciate a ride to a meeting. It's not easy trying to do it all by yourself or on line ( although I certain appreciate that AA is online. It's not a total replacement for ftf meetings, but I'm glad its here.)

Re: The Variety of Religious Experience

It's a lesson that I have to constantly relearn - that while our thoughts and feeling drive our behavior, it works both ways, and my actions and environment affects my behavior. The hard part is making myself do thi ga even though I'm feeling negative or unmotivated.
Thanks for your comment.

Re: One day at a time

I sometimes feel like "old timers" forget what is like to live a day or half hour at a time. They forget the desperation, the minute by minute struggle not to go off the rails. That is why that slogan exists. Sorry it is not for you, now, but it does help the new comer live one more sober day or hou...

Re: The Variety of Religious Experience

I live on an island in Canada that is 30% native. At one meeting on a reserve, I heard this story: There was this guy who quit drinking, and people would send their relatives to him when they drank too much. He got sober by asking his Creator for help, attending sweat lodges and smudging, making ame...

Re: The Variety of Religious Experience

Never read Varieties of Religious Experience but I ama bit familiar with him from some philosophy or psychology class. And I think hes author Henry James' brother. William seemed ahead of his time in many ways and still gets quoted in articles about neuroscience and consciousness. Was the rest of th...

Re: New Slogans

I always thought of them as just memory aids for things explained in the Big Book, but people tend to argue about what they "really" mean or what situations the slogans apply to. Only an alcoholic can complicate "keep it simple."

Re: Surviving the Holidays

One time many years ago I spent part of the holidays at a cabin with a bunch of other people who were trying quit drinking or quit something. I remember on a bright night we all went sledding down this big hill. Its was some of the most fun I've ever had as a grown up.

Re: New Slogans

Sounds very handy, but the alcoholic can't/wont think through. Thats what we are trying to debunk. The alcoholic mind goes through a freeze or most of the time deliberates but eventually the drinking thought overrides all other thoughts. This is true powerlessness. Unfortunately these messages are ...

Re: New Slogans

I dont know if it's a slogan. I dont remember seeing it on one of those wood plaques on the wall, but I've heard people in AA say "Think it through." Meaning dont just think of that first beer, but the next and the next, and how you'll feel the next day, and the plans you'll be canceling or apologie...
