Re: Crashed and burned

Thanks, everybody. Today has been good so far. I have been to an online meeting every night starting this past Sunday (the day after the ER trip), and I have been eating well and keeping my blood sugar under control. I have had a few cravings over the past two days, but I managed to stare them down....

Crashed and burned

Hi, gang. It’s been a while, and I’m back after a humiliating defeat. I don’t think I have been to this site since sometime before COVID-19 set in in late February. It has been an eventful several months. Work piled up, bills piled higher, and my anxiety grew. Because I have diabetes, I rarely left ...

Re: Addicts in AA meetings?

I would say go to a business meeting and share. Part of the reason I accepted the embrace of AA was that they were all my brothers and sisters. Except for at sobriety birthday celebrations and other public events, I did not want the outside world involved. This was just you and me, thank god, and I ...

Re: Step 1

It helped me to read about other people’s stories in the Big Book, starting with Bill W’s in the first chapter. Those folks were like living mirrors of myself . On my own, I always found some reason to pick up even after starting the day with a thorough conviction of my many reasons not to drink. I ...

Re: Sobriety and the Dentist

Hi, Emily. To me, your concerns seem best taken up with a medical professional (your GP?) who can speak to the clinical effects of medication and your dissociative episodes. He or she can help you choose the best anesthesia and pain meds for you. Bringing in your personal support circle ahead of tim...

Re: Addiction to AA meetings

Hi, Nomonde. The system of AA is designed to keep people in for eternity. That sounds like anger speaking. As someone said, you would not tell someone with heart disease, "Enough with the medication," or someone with kidney failure, "Can't you cut back on your dialysis?" And practically speaking, I'...

Re: Questions heard at meetings.

Hi, Brock! How do you use principles before personalities in the program? With some personalities I keep a distance. Keeping a distance from disturbing personalities strikes me as putting a principle front and center: the principle of nonengagement when engagement could rattle one's serenity (yours ...

Re: 12 Steps

The source of the power beyond ourselves is a personal matter. That such a power exists has been the lived experience of countless AAs and non-AAs alike. I never met mine ( =biggrin), but I am aware of its power through its effects. That reminds me of what Christina Rossetti wrote. "Who Has Seen the...

Re: New bad habits

Hi, Eran. Addictive personalities can seek many forms of relief. I have worked with therapists who have helped me identify the experiences and thinking that lie beneath the behaviors, all of which arise from a desire to control my feelings. You might benefit from therapy, too. Along the way, you mig...

Here's something from today's Daily Reflection: AN UNSUSPECTED INNER RESOURCE With few exceptions our members find that they have tapped an unsuspected inner resource which they presently identify with their own conception of a Power greater than themselves. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS. pp. 567-68 From my ...

Re: Fear

How's your prayer life? When I was in the grip of fear, I helped myself by praying before every important conversation: help me do the simple right thing now. So you self-sabotaged by submitting your resignation "in a state of panic" (BAD time to make decisions). I did that once, but I rallied, call...

Re: Fear

Hi, Robbie. I’ve had similar experiences—mentally turning molehills into mountains out of fear, the great magnifier. A recent one had me putting off an important task for a year, waking up worrying about it and then putting it off day after day. I finally reached out to someone for support. I got th...

Wish me luck!

I know a family of four, broken by drink. Mother: a normal drinker and kind woman. Divorced from husband. Father: an active alcoholic, divorced from wife, looking 80 but in late 50s, convinced that beer doesn't count, unkempt, always smells like booze and urine. Hospitalized in the past for alcoholi...

Re: Almost 2 weeks sober but craving wine

I don't know how others will feel about this suggestion, but I'm putting it out there. Because the ritual (not just the drunkenness) had appeal to me, I sometimes put apple juice into a wine glass, put my feet up, and treated myself to the nonalcoholic and self-rewarding experience. Even ice water i...

Re: New to this but need advice!!

Hi, Watergirl! Avaneesh is so right, and millions of alcoholics and medical professionals would be nodding vigorously when she explained that alcoholism is a condition (disease), not a moral failing. You are feeling shame and guilt now, but in my experience 2 things helped with that immediately. Fir...
