Re: For those of you who don’t tell people

Agreed, it's a preference. Either way is good.

I've seen solid recovery that told everybody and solid recovery that told no one.

Because of my profession, I prefer to keep silent about it.

Re: When we forgive:

I get what's meant here.

When I forgive, i feel it in my body. I feel this pressure lift off my chest and throat. It's like I've received a new neck.

Re: 6 months Sober or not?

As a slightly dissenting voice here, let me say it's first and foremost important to understand why you're smoking pot. The mark of being active isn't using so much as it is masking our emotional issues, failing to deal with them in a healthy way, through ingesting substance. Active using isn't a pr...

Re: Sharing Experience

It's fine if members want to discuss problems, just do it in a certain way: 1. mention the problem 2. your reaction to the problem; how it feels 3. take responsibility for the feeling 4. be thankful you're doing something about it; after all you are at a meeting. Employing a plot structure to our sh...

Re: TWO "MAGNIFICENT STANDARDS"

Even if AA does destroy itself from within, another group similar to AA will spring up. It's in us humans to come together and begin talking with each other when we're in pain. There were big tent groups in the 19th century similar to AA. They lost influence then Bill W made a call. We're going to r...

Re: Ranks of effective treatment

I'm in the psychological field, and I can tell you it's nearly impossible to get accurate numbers from recovery centers and hospitals. For the reasons alluded to in this thread. Severity of cases vary, unable to contact people later, various definitions of "recovered." Twelve step facilitation group...

Re: Friend or support for alcoholic uncle

You're a good person for wanting to help your uncle. But I would humbly suggest you attend an Al-Anon meeting if you truly want to help someone.

Re: Walking out of a meeting

A mentor of mine has a good take on the "meeting makers make it" slogan. His interpretation is "meeting makers make the meetings what they are." Meeting makers don't go to a meeting expecting the meeting to help them; they go there expecting themselves to help the meeting. This has been incredibly u...

Re: Highest Position in AA!

I was on the verge of going out because I felt apathetic about sobriety, which scared the crap out of me. The next meeting I walked in to, quite honestly by accident, was asking for a coffee service and I volunteered. This inadvertently got me more involved in the program through meeting new people ...

Re: Acceptance - page 417 Big Book

"nothing happens in God's world by mistake" To me, not a strong believer if at all (depends what we mean by "God"), this means that it may be helpful to look at supposedly negative occurrences and figure out how to use them to our advantage. Even if someone is being mean to us without reason, let's ...

Re: Singleness of Purpose???

The fundamental psychological issue that causes the substance abuse is the same no matter what that substance happens to be. It goes beyond substances to distractions. An alcoholic who's thinks abstractly enough would be able to get just as much from a GA or DA meeting as he would from an AA meeting...

Re: Step 3 Turning it over

Talk to your sponsee about what's at the root of his regret. Perhaps the anxiety about his paced is a displacement from anxiety in his life right now, or anxiety about not discussing what's causing his inability to let go. Or maybe he simply needs more time in the program; more emotional fluidity th...
