Re: Listerine DUI

Thanks all. The person in question has "conveniently" taken a long vacation to Florida, and we felt we could not have a group conscience without input from her. We did have a fairly emotional meeting about "honesty," after bringing all the members up to speed. Some spoke of not wanting to judge or r...

Re: Listerine DUI

Thanks Layne and Jeff for clarifying the numbers. I too googled this topic and learned that the BAL machines can give false readings. Definitely innocent until proven guilty. To clarify the story as told to me by this woman: her car is apparently well supplied with food, cigarettes and mouthwash use...

Re: Listerine DUI

Thanks all for the input. Many of our group members are also skeptical that she is telling the whole truth. I feel as Brock does, wanting to give her the benefit of the doubt. I care about this person and don't want to drive her away. I am getting pressure from a number of people to bring this up at...

Listerine DUI

A member of my home group got a DUI because she swallowed some Listerine in her car and then got into a fender-bender. It's a very gray area because although she blew over a 1.0 BAL, it was apparently not an intentional relapse. But, is it a relapse? She is the treasurer of our group, and several me...

Re: Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

To answer the dementia question ... my friend has been a rageaholic for at least 40 years. His anxiety level has gone up now that he is trying to let go of rage as a coping mechanism. BTW, I have great hopes for him with ACOA, and since the description of an ACOA pretty much matches the description ...

Re: Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

Thanks all It seems I opened a can of worms about attendance of non-alcoholics at meetings. I would certainly never take my friend to a closed meeting. He mostly sits silent at the open meetings, although occasionally, he bursts out with a comment about how much he identifies with the emotions that ...

Can a geriatric teetotaler be a latent alcoholic?

I've been sober for 30 years. I share a house with a close friend who is an Adult Child of an Alcoholic, and a teetotaler. He is 81 years old. He tells me that he once tried getting drunk to find out why his father and sister liked booze so much. He got a little relaxed, a little woozy, but didn’t s...

Re: 13th-Stepping

So, as for what you should say to him, how would you feel if he took your input on-board, went out and put a gun to his own head? If you can live with that, by all means go ahead and say what's on your mind. Not much danger of that with this guy IMO. The ego is way too big. I think others have been...

Re: 13th-Stepping

Thanks guys, you've confirmed that my instincts are fairly on target. I ALWAYS emphasize to women that they need to get support from other recovering women. I know that these 13-step victims will need our help when it's time for them to recover from their relationships with the silver-tongued devils...

Re: I am so concerned and need advice from both genders

Lynn certainly appears to be mentally ill. We had a similar case involving an older man who came on to virtually every female newcomer. He was little more subtle than Lynn, in the sense that he presented himself as someone who could help them get sober. He catch-phrase when he shared in meetings was...

13th-Stepping

I’ll call him “George.” He’s a loud, manic, superficially charming, narcissistic womanizer. Seven months sober, wearing a court-ordered ankle bracelet. Still under a PFA (protection from abuse) slapped on him by one of his exes. He got involved with one of my sponsees, a young woman with even less t...

Re: Does anyone else have this odd obsession?

"IMO becoming addicted to seeking the truth....about absolutely anything.... and being willing to pursue that truth wherever it may lead you--regardless of what other people may think or say--is a very positive addiction." Thanks everyone, especially for the above. "Positive addiction" sounds like a...

Re: Does anyone else have this odd obsession?

Thanks everybody. Paige: You got it!! That was the point of my original post. It's about my worry that people are mentally measuring me for a straitjacket, and how angry I get about that -- even if they don't actually say anything out loud! I have a lifelong feeling of being so weird and so unique. ...

Does anyone else have this odd obsession?

At 28 years sober, I picked up a new obsession. Not something “normal,” like shopping, or sugar ... but a conspiracy theory which most Americans believe is totally wacko. I thought I had finished peeling the onion and had dealt with my low self-esteem and my fear of rejection. But this experience ha...
