Re: As the codependent versus the alcoholic

Hi BlackedOut, . . . . At the same time, I am affected by the life of an advanced-stage, dysfunctional alcoholic. . . . I was angry about his laziness. But now I'm just so sad that he seems to have given up completely and seems to be waiting to die. . . . I never wanted to leave him at his worst. It...

Re: Step 3 part 2: ". . . with an understanding person"

I am not sure if I should bring this up. I don't believe that the steps should be rushed in anyway. How my Sponsor lead me through them made me willing to do the next step after completing the step we were working on. Yes, that's the approach my sponsor is taking. Not to rush through them. For me, ...

Step 3 part 2: ". . . with an understanding person"

Hi, Having meditated on the specific language of the third step (page 63) daily for several weeks now, I am feeling more ready to take this step. And I am feeling a bit urgent about it lately as I continue to struggle with the mental obsession. It says there that We found it very desirable to take t...

Re: Grief management and sobriety

I also get physically sick if I don't drink for the whole week - horrible headaches, daze, fatigue and extreme anxiety and irritation. Would tapering be better than quitting cold turkey? Getting beyond the physical dependence is something not to be taken lightly. After a binge of many many months, ...

Re: To identify, or not identify, as an alcoholic

Thanks to all who replied to this discussion. It's been a while since I posted the question and the rocky ride has continued, although the obsession is loosing is hold as I get further into the program. I have been thinking a lot about the various responses -- they have been very helpful. Part of th...

Re: Wrestling with Step 3

Thank you all for your answers. I feel a bit relieved.
I also think I may need to find a different sponsor: he didn't quite explain this to me this way.

Wrestling with Step 3

Hi, I used to think I believed in God. And I lead an outwardly religious lifestyle. But I find myself really struggling with Step 3. If it weren't for the gentle suggestion of the 12&12 book that willingness is a beginning to the 3rd step, I would conclude that, for me, the 12 steps are a hopeless c...

To identify, or not identify, as an alcoholic

Hi, I hope that those of you who have kindly indulged my previous rambling posts will not roll your eyes too badly at another one. Clearly, I'll still trying to figure this thing out. Since AA meetings are open to anyone who wants to stop drinking, I am quite sure that I qualify to attend. Although ...

Re: Cravings after anasthesia, painkillers, and psych meds

The not going it alone part is really hard for me. It's hard for me to trust anyone. Really hard. There are reasons for not going to meetings; but I suggest this is not one of them. This is more an ego fear and should be gotten over because ultimately it will cause you to drink again. (yes, I said ...

Re: Cravings after anasthesia, painkillers, and psych meds

Just too clarify: I am new to AA, but not newly sober. Sooner of later, an alcoholic will always drink again if they have not had a spiritual awakening (aka psychic change). This is what our 12 Steps do for us. It is something that we should not go at alone and be guided by another alcoholic. Many ...

Re: Cravings after anasthesia, painkillers, and psych meds

Like someone else said, sounds like a problem for the medical Doctors to answer. Maybe see more than one Doctors for 2nd opinions. Just so folks understand: I have discussed this with my psychiatrist and my psychotherapist. They both know that I've been tapering off the psych meds and agree that do...

Cravings after anasthesia, painkillers, and psych meds

Hi, I get that alcoholism is in part a spiritual disease with a spiritual solution. And maybe there is no particular reason why I am having such a difficult bout of cravings now. I just need to keep going to meetings and and do the work (I am very new to AA). However, I can't help but be curious abo...

Re: Advice for a Recovering Wiccan

Hi, This topic is helpful to me because I am very new to AA and am also a bit off the trodden path in terms of my own spiritual path. I am a fairly observant Jew, but also have an evolving practice of magic and mysticism in the Hermetic tradition. The only thing that I've felt a little uncomfortable...

Re: Intense craving after decades of abstinence -- is AA for

Hi folks, Thank you all so much for your thoughtful replies. They are helpful. Alcoholism as we understand is a 3 fold disease. Spiritual, Mental and Physical. If we get squirely we get disconnected from consciousness and then a drink looks real good, because we are used to "effect caused by drinkin...

Intense craving after decades of abstinence -- is AA for me?

Hi, I'm not sure if AA is right for me. This is going to be a long post. I appreciate your patience. There is alcoholism on all sides of my family and I grew up around signifciant alcohol consumption and drug use. I used marijuana off and on from age 9 to 15 (in high school, I used it daily). Mostly...
