The main problerm is that some folks are bothered by the off color language. We need to keep it down. Thanks!

New Types of Drunks
I think this is a very interesting conversation. I happen to be from the old school in that I didn't come in through a treatment center or the courts. Probably because when I originally got sober in Alaska, the nearest treatment center was in Oregon. I got drug into my first meeting by another membe...

Unsponsor
Don't mind us, Pan. We're just going through some babbling to hear ourselves talk. I think a sponsor is very important in AA. They are the experienced member that has been through the steps & can help guide you through the steps. They've usually been through things very similar to our own experience...

Re: (un)sponsored
Tell the "AA Police" to go stick it! I have to agree with Ian on this one. Although I was once sober for 7 years, I ended up drunk again. When I decided to give AA another try 5 years later, I heard some good things from a young lad in a meeting. He was only 14 years old & had just celebrated 1 year...

Re: (un)sponsored
co-unsponsors! I love it! Ya know, there are no rules in AA, just a lot of suggestions. SOme people, like me, prefer having a sponsor. Others don't. I always figured whatever worked for the individual is what they shoud do. I do have to say that having a sponsor throughout my years of sobriety has b...

Re: I'm going to quit!
Welcome Chrisy! As several folks have mentioned, withdrawel is different for everybody. Even though I was a heavy-duty whiskey drinker, the detox wasn't bad at all. I had a pretty good case of the shakes, but that only lasted a few days. I started on a Sunday & by the end of the week I was going to ...

Hi Keith! I'm sorry for your friend. And yet, old Charlie could have been me. I was there, 7 years sober and suddenly with a bottle in my hand. No excuses. I continued to drink for over 5 more years. During the last six months of that, I ended up in the emergency room twice, having my heart restarte...

Re: Saying the words
Welcome Maria! By the time I got to AA, I hadn't cried in a long time. Then all of the sudden, I couldn't stop. I cried over sad movies, sad books, sad stories. What sobriety did was to give back my emotions that I had spent a lifetime trying to bury. It took me some time to understand what was happ...

Re: Sponsors
Getting a sponsor isn't really anything a person has to fear. You can always change sponsors if the one you have doesn't work out. Yes, you may get told no when you ask. Usually a person will tell you why. Alreaddy sponsoring several people, strange working hours or they simply may not sponsor peopl...

Re: Sober without AA?
Hey Pojack! #1. You don't have to talk at an AA meeting unless you choose to. Very few of us want to speak up when we first come to the program. #2. You think you've done some bad stuff? If you stick around long enough, you'll hear some horrendous stories from some of us. We don't judge each other. ...

Pablito,
Please accept my condolences on your loss. It is great that you are sober & can remain sober through this. I lost my Dad to cancer in July of 1992. I was drunk through the funeral & the reception afterwards. I got sober February 14th of 1993, jus a few months later.
Hugs!

Re: ?? about becoming alcoholic.. conditions
In the Big Book, Chapter 3, it states "We alcoholics are men and women who have lost the ability to control their drinking." That's the best & simplest definition that I have ever heard. Just because we stop drinking doesn't mean we are no longer alcoholics. It just means we're SOBER alcoholics. One...

Re: Sponsor from outside AA?
While I always think Jim is a little hard on folks, I agree with him here. A sponsor should be someone in the AA program, working the steps & walking the talk. An outsider may be ok for your 5 step, but if they haven't been one of us, they have no knowledge of what it takes.

Re: Tradition Number Four (Study)
Hi Shane! I'm sorry to hear that the groups in your area don't work by the Traditions. However, it's not like that everywhere. Here in Great Falls & most of Montana, the groups really pay attention to the traditions. If we had groups here accepting money from outside interests or using religious lit...
